UK PLC - Going Down…
Really interesting geopolitical pontification from Jim Rogers on the Channel4 website. Now Jim is an irritating man; one of those guys prone to talking as if he has a monopoly on wisdom, and with one of those George Sorros type vested interests in talking economies up and down. When he tells us that his 5 year old daughter is fluent in Mandarin, he means it to sound far-sighted, when in fact it sounds smug.
Despite this I quite enjoyed what he had to say. In essence he believes that UK PLC has had its day with North Sea oil production, with being a centre of world banking, and that now with “nothing left to sell” the UK can look forward to becoming an economic and political backwater. No doubt Gordon Brown would have a pat response along the lines of “the UK has long led the world in science and technology innovation and will be a world leader in the emerging Green Economy”. Provocative stuff and I have a feeling that Rogers may be on to something.
Still, it’s arguable that the entire world has reached peak oil, and we can all look forward to a spectacular implosion and scratching around in a Mad Max style dystopia while some of us question the usefulness of a career in technology commentary as we scramble through the shell of a Starbucks to catch a fox for our next meal…
Anyway, I’m losing myself. Check the video out for yourself:
