Humans have long underestimated their own ignorance. From declaring the completion of science at the beginning of 20th Century, to declaring the end of history at the close, we tend to comfort ourselves with an illusion of understanding, which leads to an illusion of control. This has been a familiar observation since as far back as Socrates, who said, “the only thing I know is that I do not know”.
